Are the pharmacokinetics for Citalopram different in elderly patients?

Answers to key questions from experts here at Lundbeck

Yes. The pharmacokinetics of citalopram have been studied in elderly patients (aged 73-90) (ref.1). Following administration of citalopram 20 mg once daily, steady-state plasma concentrations in these patients were higher than those seen in younger patients and healthy volunteers. The mean plasma half-life in the elderly (54 hours) was no longer than that in healthy young volunteers (35 hours). On the basis of these findings, a maximum daily dose of 40 mg is recommended for patients over 65 years of age.
