Can citalopram have a negative effect on people suffering from renal insufficiency?
Answers to key questions from experts here at Lundbeck
None has been noted in patients with moderate renal insufficiency. In a single-dose (20 mg) study in 7 patients with moderate renal insufficiency (creatinine or [51 Cr]-EDTA clearance of 10-53 ml/min), the oral clearance of citalopram did not differ from that in healthy age- and sex-matched controls (ref.1). Accordingly, no dosage adjustment is required in patients with moderate renal insufficiency. However, no information is available for patients with severe renal impairment (ref.2).
